What does it mean to work in Innovation?

George_sittingAs part of our day in a life series exploring the different team roles here at ICHP, Innovation Delivery Manager, George Garrad shares his day with us.

I first open my eyes…

I tend to head out of the house, pick up a coffee and read the paper (The Times) on my smartphone. I also have a quick scan of Twitter, which is a good way of getting to grips with what’s going on the work world as well as personal interests.

I’m responsible for…

I lead on most of our work on mental health, which is a subject close to my heart, having spent many years working in the voluntary sector and having a clinical diagnosis myself. I’m excited about potentially leading on the development of a policing and mental health integration project with the two major trusts in NW London.

My path took me…

I worked in the voluntary sector for around seven years, working in the homelessness, mental health and drug and alcohol sector. I had a brief interlude of a year where I turned a warehouse in Hackney Wick into a night club, which was a lot of fun but not what I wanted to do in the long run.

My daily calendars reminders look like…

The diary is variable. For example, today I met with a potential new colleague first thing, then went off to a meeting with Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust about a new project and finished up writing an internal proposal for our directors about an in house clinical advisor programme I’m looking to set up.

My most memorable work moment…

I hope it’s too early to say! If we can get the clinical advisor programme off the ground and it allows medics to come and learn innovations skills and then re enter clinical work, that will be a great achievement.

My biggest groan about my job is…

Feeling a bit far from the action sometimes. I miss working with people that use services and the fast pace/chaotic joy that can bring.

My best part of my job…

My colleagues are the best part of my job. I have never worked for a company with such a diverse array of expertise. I can learn from each and every one of them, which is an amazing opportunity.
